Keeping Your Baby Toxin Free

By Estelle Hayes

Are you pregnant? Thinking of becoming pregnant or know anyone in the baby way? If yes, this post is for you. While you’re preparing for your precious arrival, you’ll likely be stocking up on diapers, wipes, bubble bath and hand sanitizer, just to name a few of the essentials in your diaper bag.

Be sure to always look for products that are free from the basic bad guys. i.e. toxic chemicals including phthalates, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLSs), triclosan and anything with a “fragrance” or “perfume.” These days there a lot of good options compared to the mainstream brands, including California Baby (love their sunscreen and bubble bath), 7th Generation and 365 Everyday (diapers and wipes), and most recently, The Honest Company.

We are just leaving baby/toddler phase around my house, but oh how I wish The Honest Company had been around a few years ago. It seems Jessica Alba caught on to the lack of clean baby product options when she started her own family and now she’s created her solution. I have not tried these products and I’d love to hear some first-hand feedback. So far, I’m impressed to see a company that is working to make clean and affordable products that also have an aesthetic. They sold me on their diaper designs. It’s all very encouraging.

You may be shocked to learn that hundreds of baby products, from diapers to bubble bath, are filled with known carcinogens. The US government does not regulate the often dangerous ingredients in personal care products. In the case of added fragrance or “perfume,” outdated laws actually allow manufacturers to treat these ingredients as trade secrets. Meaning you have no way of knowing what sort of synthetic fragrance is creating the “baby fresh” scent.  All of this is to say, as consumers we need to do our homework and protect ourselves (and our babies) from chemicals that could cause cancer, serious hormone disruption or allergic reactions. Learn more by visiting the Environmental Working Group and be sure to check out any of your personal care products on their database, Skin Deep.
